Often health is not considered a priority in a chaotic life where survival takes precedence. Indeed, preventative health care and management of chronic illness is often overlooked.

Consequently, there is a need for services to be equipped to respond at the moment help is sought. Discrimination, judgmental attitudes and lack of understanding (perceived or otherwise) only further contribute to limited contact with the mainstream health system.

A drug is any substance, solid, liquid or gas that changes the functions or structures of the body in some way. This excludes food and water, which are required to maintain normal body functioning.

The drugs of most concern to the community are those that affect a person's central nervous system. These are the psychoactive drugs. They act on the brain and can change the way a person thinks, feels or behaves.

Drugs are derived from a range of sources. Many are found in plants, for example nicotine in tobacco; caffeine in coffee beans; and cocaine from the coca plant. Morphine and codeine are derived from the opium poppy, while heroin is produced by the chemical modification of morphine. Marijuana is the leaf, buds and seed heads of the cannabis plant, while hashish and hash oil are the plant's resin.

Alcohol is produced by the natural process of fermentation that happens when fruit, grain or vegetables decompose. Certain fungi, such as magic mushrooms and cactus plants, are considered drugs because of their hallucinogenic properties. Medicines can be manufactured from both natural and artificial chemicals.

A number of state and national surveys have been conducted to assess the extent of drug use. These surveys provide clear evidence that Spain is a nation of drug users.

Estimations of the Spanish population aged 14 and over, at some time in their lives, who have taken drugs:

90.71% had used alcohol;
47.1% had used tobacco;
33.61% had used marijuana;
5.5% had used analgesics (pain-killers); ^(a)
2.8% had used tranquillisers/sleeping pills; ^(a)
7.5% had used hallucinogens;

The prevalence of consumption of illegal drugs (cannabis, cocaine, synthetic and medical drugs) in adolescents of Madrid. A sample of 1570 subjects of both sexes was studied (54.4% were boys and 45.6% were girls) within a range from 14 to 18 years of age. The results pointed out that cannabis was the drug most consumed by young people showing a prevalence of consumption higher than that obtained by the other illegal drugs. The use of this type of drugs keeps a direct relationship with age, the group of 16 to 18 years old being the one of higher risk comparing with those of lower age.

Teenagers start drinking alcohol at the age of 13 and finally drink alcohol at weekends when they are 15. Hashish is consumed first time among 71 % teenagers aged 13-16. Joints are highly smoked among students in Galapagar.

It is necessary to strengthen well-balanced social perceptions on drugs consumption which avoid both pessimism and indifference. It is required to strengthen the prevention practitioners’ formation, and also that of those people who participate in most of the local preventive actions as mediators. In order to make effective the priority given to prevention at public speeches, it must be reflected in the distribution of the drug dependencies public expenditure.

Depression is a common mental disorder, characterized by sadness, loss of interest or pleasure, feelings of guilt or low self-worth, disturbed sleep or appetite, low energy and poor concentration.

These problems can become chronic or recurrent, substantially impairing an individual’s ability to cope with daily life. At its most severe, depression can lead to suicide. Most cases of depression can be treated with medication or psychotherapy.

Today, depression is already the 2nd cause of DALYs (Disability Adjusted Life Years) in the age category 15-44 years for both sexes combined.

Occupational health deals with all aspects of health and safety in the workplace and has a strong focus on primary prevention of hazards. The health of the workers has several determinants, including risk factors at the workplace leading to cancers, accidents, musculoskeletal diseases, respiratory diseases, hearing loss, circulatory diseases, stress related disorders and communicable diseases and others.

Employment and working conditions in the formal or informal economy embrace other important determinants, including, working hours, salary, workplace policies concerning maternity leave, health promotion and protection provisions, etc.

Pressure at the workplace or peer pressure is unavoidable due to the demands of the contemporary work or students’ environment. Pressure perceived as acceptable by an individual, may even keep workers alert, motivated, able to work and learn, depending on the available resources and personal characteristics. However, when that pressure becomes excessive or otherwise unmanageable it leads to stress. Stress can damage an employees' health and the business and studying performance.

Work-related stress can be caused by poor work organisation (the way we design jobs and work systems, and the way we manage them), by poor work design (for example, lack of control over work processes), poor management, unsatisfactory working conditions, and lack of support from colleagues and supervisors.

Research findings show that the most stressful type of work is that which values excessive demands and pressures that are not matched to workers’ knowledge and abilities, where there is little opportunity to exercise any choice or control, and where there is little support from others.

Being respected and appreciated by significant others is one of the most fundamental human needs. Consequently, people go to great pain to gain acceptance and approval. Being appreciated is one of the most important factors that increases motivation and satisfaction as well as health and well-being.

Nutrition is the intake of food, considered in relation to the body’s dietary needs. Good nutrition – an adequate, well balanced diet combined with regular physical activity – is a cornerstone of good health. Poor nutrition can lead to reduced immunity, increased susceptibility to disease, impaired physical and mental development, and reduced productivity.

Nutrition disorders can be caused by an insufficient intake of food or of certain nutrients, by an inability of the body to absorb and use nutrients, or by overconsumption of certain foods. Examples include obesity caused by excess energy intake, anaemia caused by insufficient intake of iron, and impaired sight because of inadequate intake of vitamin A. Nutrition disorders can be particularly serious in children, since they interfere with growth and development, and may predispose to many health problems, such as infection and chronic disease.

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are infections that are spread primarily through person-to-person sexual contact. There are more than 30 different sexually transmissible bacteria, viruses and parasites. Several, in particular HIV and syphilis, can also be transmitted from mother to child during pregnancy and childbirth, and through blood products and tissue transfer.

Some of the commonest sexually transmitted pathogens can be divided into those caused by bacteria, viruses and parasites.

340 million new cases of curable STIs (syphilis, gonorrhoea, chlamydia and trichomoniasis) occur annually throughout the world in adults aged 15-49 years. In developing countries, STIs and their complications rank in the top five disease categories for which adults seek health care. Infection with STIs can lead to acute symptoms, chronic infection and serious delayed consequences such as infertility, ectopic pregnancy, cervical cancer and the untimely death of infants and adults.

Several common STDs adversely affect pregnancy, causing spontaneous abortions, stillbirths, preterm delivery and postpartum endometritis.

Prompt treatment for STIs is important to reduce the risk of HIV infection. Controlling STIs is important for preventing HIV in people at high risk, as well as in the general population. Some sexually transmitted infections often exist without symptoms. A l'issue de la visite préparatoire ( 12 au 16 janvier 2009) , les 4 pays partenaires ( Italie, Espagne, Pologne, et Hongrie)ont élaboré le projet suivant: Sur le thème" POUR MIEUX VIVRE" un groupe d'élèves de chaque pays partenaire travaille sur le sujet suivant:

"Comment informer et prévenir les adolescents sur tous les risques auxquels ils sont confrontés: tabac, alcool, drogue, troubles du comportement alimentaire, sida...sous la direction de leur professeur les élèves ont initié des opérations d'information auprès de tous les élèves de leur lycée respectif. C'est un travail sur les années scolaires 2009-2010 et 2010-2011 présentiel de 40 à 60 heures par an ( +toutes les recherches personnelles).

La première année a été l'occasion d'organiser dans chaque pays un Coménius Day: "FOR A BETTER LIFE" le 4 Mars 2010.La préparation de cette journée ( enquête et sondage auprès de tous les élèves des Lycées, recherche et contact avec les professionnels, organisation des conférences..) a mobililisé tous les élèves porteurs du projet de septembre 2009 à février 2010. Après le déroulement de cette journée, un sondage de satisfaction auprès des élèves et conférenciers a permis de faire une évaluation qui s'est avérée très positive ( depuis, nous réitérons cette journée pour mieux vivre chaque année), au cours de cette période , tous les pays partenaires ont échangé régulière par mail l'avancement de leurs travaux.

Du lundi 26 avril au vendredi 30 avril toutes les délégations se sont retrouvées en Espagne à GALAPAGAR présenter leurs travaux.

La 2nde année a mobilisé les jeunes sur les moyens de prévention existants des conduites à risque des jeunes.

De septembre 2010 à Décembre 2010, une étude sur le plan local ou départemental, en reprenant les thèmes abordés en 2009-2010, a été menée. Cette étude a conduit les jeunes à rencontrer tous les interlocuteurs qui peuvent aider les jeunes( police, établissements sanitaires et sociaux, associations..

De janvier 2011 à avril 2011, les élèves ont communiqués entre eux sur la réalisation d'un document sur toute la prévention existante et ont finalisé leur "show" pour la présentation de leur travail au cours de notre rencontre en Italie.

En Mai 2011, toutes les délégations se sont retrouvées en Italie à Bormio pour présenter leur travaux et ainsi faire une étude comparative des études réalisées. Le travail présenté par chaque délégation ( diaporama, mises en scènes de théâtre, chant...) ont été de grande qualité et très enrichissante pour tous.

Le produit final sous clé usb va être envoyé par le pays coordonateur la France , à tous les pays partenaires ainsi qu'à l'agence Nationale.

En dehors des bénéfices indéniables ( échanges, intérêt des langues étrangères, relations...) l'objectif de ces deux années est aussi le moyen de créer une dynamique pérenne dans chaque établissement sur la prévention des risques encourus par les adolescents.

At the end of the preparatory visit (12 to 16 January 2009), the four partner countries (Italy, Spain, Poland, and Hungary) have developed the following project: Under the theme "For a Better Life" a group of students of each partner works on the subject:

"How to inform and prevent teenagers on the risks they face: tobacco, alcohol, drugs, eating disorders, AIDS ... under the direction of their teacher students have initiated operations informing all their respective high school students. It is a work of the school years 2009-2010 and 2010-2011-face 40 to 60 hours per year (+ all the research).

The first year was an opportunity to organize in each country a Comenius Day: "FOR A BETTER LIFE" March 4 2010. Preparing for this day (investigation and survey of all high school students, research and contact with professionals, organization of conferences ..) has involved all students carry the project September 2009-February 2010. After the course of the day, a satisfaction survey of students and lecturers has an assessment that has been very positive (since we reiterate this day to live better each year), during this period, all partner countries have exchanged regular mail by the progress of their work.

Monday 26 April to Friday, April 30 all the delegations met in Spain to present their work GALAPAGAR.

The 2nd year has mobilized young people on how existing prevention of risk behaviours among young people.

From September 2010 to December 2010, a study on the local or county, taking up the themes in 2009-2010 was conducted. This study has led young people to meet with all stakeholders who can help young people (police, health and social institutions, associations...).

From January 2011 to April 2011, the students communicated with each other on the implementation of a document on any existing prevention and finalized their "show" to present their work during our meeting in Italy.

In May 2011, all the delegations met in Bormio in Italy to present their work and make a comparative study of studies. The work presented by each delegation (slide show, staged drama, singing ...) were of high quality and very rewarding for all.

The final product will be sent usb by the country coordinator of France, all partner countries as well as the national agency.

Apart from the undeniable benefits (exchanges, interest in foreign languages, relations ...) the objective of these two years is also a way to create a dynamic sustainable in each facility on the prevention of risks to adolescents.

BORMIO – “For a better life”; oppure “Pour mieux vivre”; insomma, “per vivere meglio”. Questo lo slogan ed il filo conduttore del progetto biennale che ha coinvolto gli studenti del Liceo dell’Istituto Leibniz di Bormio e quelli delle scuole di altre quattro nazioni.

Il progetto Comenius è una iniziativa rivolta a tutti gli studenti europei di tutte le scuole ed ha quale obiettivo principale quello di sviluppare la conoscenza e la comprensione della diversità culturale e linguistica europea e del suo valore oltre che di aiutare i giovani ad acquisire le competenze di base necessarie per la vita e le competenze necessarie ai fini dello sviluppo personale, dell’occupazione e della cittadinanza europea attiva. Insomma, una occasione davvero importante per favorire la conoscenza reciproca dei giovani europei all’interno della realtà dell’Unione Europea.

Nel caso specifico, per gli studenti del Leibniz di Bormio, si tratta di un progetto biennale europeo avviato nel 2010, ancora con il precedente anno scolastico (l’incontro degli studenti avvenne a Madrid), che si sta concludendo proprio in questi giorni in Alta Valtellina con la presenza degli studenti che rappresentano Francia (istituto coordinatore del progetto), Spagna, Polonia, Ungheria e Italia.
“I partenariati Comenius – spiegano studenti ed insegnanti – offrono la possibilità di lavorare insieme ai coetanei e ai colleghi degli altri Paesi. Quest’anno le scuole e gli studenti partecipanti hanno lavorato su di un argomento uguale per tutti”. L’argomento del progetto a cui ha partecipato l’istituto di Bormio, ha cercato di proporre una riflessione sui comportamenti a rischio (fumo, droga, alcolismo), specialmente in ambito giovanile. Riflessione proposta attraverso questionari, raccolta di dati e statistiche, interventi di esperti. Nella mattinata, all’auditorium dell’Istituto Leibniz, c’è stato l’incontro tra le varie delegazioni. La presentazione delle varie esperienze avviene attraverso le lingue ufficiali del progetto che sono l’inglese e il francese.
Bormio e l’Alta Valtellina stanno ospitando in questi giorni gli studenti del Liceum Gimnazjum Zgromadzenia Sacre Coeur (Polonia), della Modell Divatiskola (Ungheria), del Lycée Marie Balavenne (Francia), dell’IES Cañada Real Spagna). Gli studenti di Bormio con i loro docenti hanno preparato un programma intenso che ha contemplato la replica dello spettacolo proposto nell’ambito di un altro progetto, “Un giorno per la vita” (di cui potete rivedere le immagini), una serie di escursioni e visite guidate e, appunto, l’incontro odierno di tutte le delegazioni accolte dalla dirigente, Pinuccia Tognoli Lazzeri, e dall’insegnante coordinatrice del progetto Bettina Armellini.

Our project this year

We'll be working on four topics: eating habits and disorders, drugs, sex-related illnesses and social illnesses and phobia. We'll be in touch with different social, political, educational and legal authorities so as to carry out a research and then compare the results among all the partners once in Italy in May 2011.
Hopefully, this will make our teenagers see the risks and also be aware of what they may do to help other students as well!

I feel happy -and relaxed, I have to say now- that you could eventually come to Spain. The weather was wonderful so we were able to carry out all our plans:

We have nearly finished our Comenius Day in Spain at IES Cañada Real. On Monday there will be the last lecture at school since Dr Ruth Blanco Rojo,who is going to talk about "Eating disorders among teenagers", couldn't come on Thursday. NUTRITIONAL INTERVENTION IN A TEENAGE MULTIRACIAL GROUP.

IN THE LAST FEW YEARS immigration has increased in Spain and the Spanish society has changed too since there are people coming from different parts of the world, specially East European countries, North Africa and Latin America. Consequently, primary and secondary public school pupils are quite varied.
The IES CAÑADA REAL is a public Secondary school situated in Galapagar, a town 33km away from the capital city of Spain, Madrid. There is an important number of foreigners living in Galapagar (17 per cent of the inhabitants are from abroad). Therefore, in the IES CAÑADA REAL pupils are rather heterogeneous: 17 per cent of students are from Maghreb and they have a lot of difficulties mostly because of the language and sometimes due to their family, social and cultural scene; a 41 per cent are South American students who have a low academic level and poor parental guidance. Then, 4 per cent of students from East European countries and the rest are Spanish.

On the one hand, pupils’ integration is necessary and we must deal with the issue taking into account several things. We have considered it important to study first their food and exercise habits and then see the connection with their countries of origin considering three areas in particular: Spain, Morocco and Latin America.
On the other hand, sharing experiences with the Spanish teenagers could also bring about their total integration with teenagers from other countries.
Since teenagers undergo a lot of morphological, functional and psychological changes, food is a very important subject to their development. Therefore, an unhealthy diet could lead to some bad habits and end up in pathology.
Just before starting with the project, we will explain it completely to the pupils and their families. Moreover, consent will be asked for both to the students and their parents.
Our aims:
1. Analyse the diet of three groups of teenage students coming from different countries: Spain, Morocco and Latin America.
2. Examine their physical exercise habits.
3. Study in depth the connection between the study parameters and the students’ home and cultural habits.
4. See the connections between their diet and their physical exercise habits.
5. Design a control model in order to improve their nutritional values and their physical activities so that they could follow healthier patterns.
6. Finally judge their changes as far as their food habits and physical exercise are concerned.
WE WILL BE WORKING WITH fourteen-to-sixteen-year-old students from three (or more in the Comenius Project) different countries. We will distinguish four points: Origin / Number / Men / Women. After each diet analysis we will hand in a report both to the families and the School Headmasters as well.
DATA CAPTURE.
AS THE STUDENTS ARE teenagers it is necessary to get the project revised by the teachers (P.E. teachers mostly) and the parents. We suggest the students’ copying down all the food items they have in 3 different days in open questionnaires: 2 working days and 1 holiday. Each student will write down all the food items they have had in their main meals of the day (breakfast, lunch, dinner) and also between meals (brunch, afternoon snack “merienda” and after dinner). The records will be checked with the families.
We will be working with software called DIAL (Alce Engineering) New recipes and food items can be added and their components will be analyzed and distributed according to the group they belong to. We will take into account: calories, proteins, fatty foods, carbohydrates and fibre. All the results will be compared with the daily recommended intake. Vitamins and minerals will also be compared with the reference values named Dietary Reference Intake.
ENERGY SPENDS.
EACH STUDENT WILL record all the exercise they take, their sleep hours, their class time and their rest time too so that they could know their energy spends. Each activity is given an energy spend value in particular.

The data are registered according to the intensity and duration of each exercise and the energy spend is estimated and expressed in MET. Thus, we know the PAL (Physical Activity Level) of each student and can classify them into: sedentary people, low-activity people, active people and very active people. Moreover, we could also see the difference between men and women.
IN EACH SURVEY WE will consider all the information concerning the students’ healthy habits: physical exercise, drug use, alcohol consumption and so on. Socio-cultural aspects will be considered as part of the process too.
We will be working with the students both individually and in groups (in class and at school) so as to guide them in order for them to improve their food habits and daily physical exercise by means of:
 Interdisciplinary activities: dealing with the topics in Physical Education and Science –health, nutrition and physical exercise-.
 Wall displays at school giving students information about the topic.

 Lectures to students, families and teachers showing the results of the first part of the project highlighting the positive aspects of the different groups under control.
 Report draft containing an assessment which will be later explained to the students and their families individually.
 Comenius activities.

WE, THE IES CAÑADA REAL, AS PART OF THIS COMENIUS project, seek to develop knowledge and understanding among young people, parents and educational staff of the diversity of cultures, languages and values. It should help young people acquire the basic life skills and competences necessary for their personal development and active citizenship as well as enhancing and increasing partnerships between schools in different countries, with as many students as we can, taking part in joint educational activities.

They left Saint-Brieuc on Tuesday morning, they arrived in Madrid late in the evening, they came to our school on Wednesday morning and we spent a very good time together with them. Besides, we worked on getting everything ready for our Comenius Week in April and they went back to France early this morning.

This is a wonderful project we've started working on this year and we hope you'll all join us.
We will be dealing with a very interesting subject, a healthy diet, with other European countries such as France, Italy, Hungary and Poland and we also hope Portugal may be part of the project again next year.
Courage! Let's be part of Europe, meet new people and make friends.

Hello, my name is Flavia, I'm 15 years old and I’m Italian. I've got brown hair, big brown eyes and white skin. I have 2 brothers. They are 5 and 16 years old. We live with my mother, because my parents are separated. My life is very normal... I go to school every day and I practise martial arts, like taekwondo. I like photography so much! I'm a sociable, very talkative and nice person. I like meeting my friends and travelling around the world. I like animals too, but I don't have any pets because I live in a flat.

I like sports, particularly basketball. I play in a team near my village called Madrid Sierra. I study English at school and at the British Council here in Spain also. My favourite subjects are History and Biology. I like music. I like rap and house. I’ve been listening to rap for maybe 6 years. I like it very much. I’ve joined this project to trip to another country and to participate in all those things about health. I’ve also joined to practise my English.

Hi, my name is Carlos, and I live in galapagar .I am fifteen years old. I love music, but I respect all types of music. My favourite music are rock and heavy metal, but I love ballads. I play the drums, the piano and compose many songs. I've played indoor football since I was seven years old. I love football , but generalizing I like sports. I like my friends and staying with them and my classmates are the best .My secondary school is nice and I have a good time there. I'm a moody, shameful, kindly, sincere and affectionate person...I love Spain, it has a lot of history and our gastronomy is exquisite!
